13C Urea Breath Test
In this test, the patient is given a minimal oral does of 13C urea. the presence of Helicobacter pylori is characterised by an unusually high level of ureases activity. If Helicobacter pylori is present, the lablled urea is hydrolysed to 13CO2, Which circulates to lungs and is expired in the breath where it can be detected.
The use of this isotope, together with the fact that only two breath test samples need to be taken in duplicate at 0 and 30 minutes, means that this test is simple to carry out in children.
The 13C urea breath test provides a complete picture of the total gastric colonisation, and directly reflects the situation at the time of measurement. This facilitates monitoring shortly after eradication.
